In today's time, it’s very likely that either you or someone you know has been laid off due to cut backs or out sourcing. We are constantly told how bad things are and all we need to do is just look around to see that we are truly in bad times. The days of cradle to grave job security are long gone! We will never be able to count on having the same job for life like our parent’s generation did. What if I told you that you could find employment security? What do I mean by that? What if you already have or are willing to learn skills that all employers are constantly looking for? What exactly are some of these traits or skills?
I feel I can speak about this because I have applied this to myself and can attest to how it has helped me not only stay employed but find ways to grow and enjoy the work I do. First, there are a few books that I would like to recommend: “See You at the Top ” and “Over the Top” . Both of these books are written by Zig Ziglar; also “The Power of Positive Thinking” written by Norman Vincent Peale. These books can help lay the foundation to a better outlook on life. Change starts from within. Each of these authors state that you must be willing to change your internal perspective before external change will actually take place. You hear many things like PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), PLOM disease (Poor Little Ole Me), and stinking thinking (negative thinking). Attitude makes the difference whether it is negative or positive.
Some of the traits or skills that will help lead to employment security are:
- Honesty
- Positive Mental Attitude
- Be A Team Player
- Discipline
- Commitment
- Character
- Hardworking
- Good Communicator
- Goal Directed
This is just a small list. To get the full list of skills that can be learned and applied by everyone, please refer to “Over the Top” by Zig Ziglar, page 140 for more details.
I like the way Anthony Robinson frames up the way we should look at our time. In his “Unleashing the Power from Within,” Anthony states that most people refer to this present time as the Information Age. Some even state that information is power but Anthony says information is potential power. It takes action to produce power. So we must learn to apply what we learn to produce the desired results we long for.
Things to keep in mind:
- Yesterday ended last night.
- It’s not where you start but where you finish that counts.
- Failure is an event not a person.
